Think of situations in which it might be helpful to set up coordinate planes, using an x-axis and a y-axis. What kind of information might you plot on this coordinate plane? Can you see any trends by looking at points on a coordinate plane?

coordinateMany of my classmates had some great responses from video games, GPS & Roadmaps. What would you say?

I know normally when you use a GPS you enter street addresses but you can enter coordinates as well. There is this game called geocaching (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. It’s kind of fun. It’s like looking for treasure! Here’s an example, I live in the same zip as the school, 32809. Big Oak (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site.‘s cash is at coordinates: N 28° 28.792 W 081° 22.847. So if you plug in those coordinates to your GPS or google maps you will see where X marks the spot.

Here are some of my responses to my classmates….

I recall in one of the MA classes were we charted children’s growth patterns, using measurements of the head, chest, and length. Using those numbers on the chart helped one to know if the child was on target or if there may be a health issue.

Can you imagine what have must have been like for sailors to use Stars or a Sextant to navigate by? Still using coordinates but, I am so thankful for my GPS.

Perfect example! If you ever want to track a family member’s flight, you should go to Flightaware (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site.. It’s scary at first to see all those planes covering the US, but it’s interesting to see on the map where they are going.

My husband builds model airplanes. The coordinates on the plans show how long a wing rib should be and where it should go in order to make it structurally sound. This is also used in 3D CAD designing as well as well as in graphic arts design. Entering the wrong coordinates can change the design completely.
